Bernita Marie Ohde, 80, passed away Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at Valley View Village after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She was born October 2, 1942 to Lyle and Margaret (Rieger) Capper in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Bernita graduated from Lisbon High School in 1960 where she was active in music, cheerleading, and was the majorette of the school band. After high school, Bernita attended Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa and then transferred to Coe College in Cedar Rapids. She married the love of her life, Roger, on August 9, 1962. After moving several times, the family settled in Bondurant in the early 1970s where they raised their family and became active in the community.

Bernita drove school bus for 22 years for Bondurant-Farrar School District and was Roger’s “unpaid” secretary for his career. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and enjoyed wintering in Arizona. Bernita was the caretaker of the family, always helping her husband, children, and grandchildren.

Bernita is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Roger; children, Michael (Julie) Ohde, Karlyn (Matt) Beenblossom, and Kevin (Dave Hraha) Ohde; grandchildren, Kaitlin, Ashten, and Mathew Ohde and Tia and Taryn Beenblossom; sisters, Kaylene (David) Canfield, Marlene (Terry) Burk, and Tamara Shaw; and a host of other family and beloved friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lyle and Margaret Capper.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, February 13, 2023 at Bondurant Christian Church, 304 Grant Street S, Bondurant. Family will greet friends from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Monday at the church and a private interment will occur at Bondurant Cemetery later that day.

The family would like to encourage all who are able to join them for a luncheon in the church hall immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association or Bondurant Christian Church in loving memory of Bernita Ohde.
