Derrius Taylor-Ly
February 05, 2023
Derrius Grey Taylor-Ly, 22, passed away Sunday, February 5, 2023, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Derrius had a huge personality, reserved only for the people in his inner circle. That included his family and his best friends he’s had since elementary and high school. He made an entrance in any room he walked into, with a stomp, ear to ear smile and probably a dance – he loved to make cameos in his little sister’s Tik Toks. Derrius lived life with no filter. He said whatever he thought and it was usually an inappropriate joke. He loved to get on anybody’s nerves and took it up as a sport, particularly with his sister, Alicia. He was a huge mama’s boy, calling her about every 30 minutes, just to talk or be weird. Derrius had an artistic brain. He loved to draw, paint, create and talk about music, especially Dro Kenji, and anime with his brother, Reyes. He was the hardest working student at Iowa State University, set to graduate this May. His work will be honored with a posthumous Bachelor’s degree from Iowa State in Marketing and Entrepreneurship.
He is survived by his parents, Veronica “Zeka” and Ronnie Young, Jr.; siblings, Reyes Taylor-Ly, Alicia Young, Bonnie Young, Ronnie Young III, Robbie Young, and Mercedesse Ly; nieces, Stella and Emme; grandparents, Man Ly, Dena Young, Mike Anderson, Ronnie Young, Sr., and Barb Hornberger-Whelchel; his favorite furry, four-legged son, Remington; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, other loving relatives, and many special friends.
Derrius was preceded in death by his grandparents, Carmen and Kelly Taylor, Phimpha Ly; and his father, Desse Ly.
Funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 11, 2023, followed by a visitation until 2:00 p.m., to be held at Lutheran Church of the Cross, 1701 8th Street SW, Altoona, IA 50009. Celebration of Life to follow services, beginning at 3 p.m., at Fireside Grille, 523 8th Street SE, Altoona, IA 50009.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family to be distributed amongst numerous pet rescue charities.

The last time I saw Derrius was in December. I never thought that would be our last conversation and it saddens me to say I cannot recall all that was said. However, I do remember laughing so hard I was doubled over at a joke Derrius had made. Derrius had the type of personality that made you feel at ease - you could be yourself around him, just like he was always doing.
To know someone so genuine and lose them is truly tragic. I pray everyday for D and that he can rest easy. His impact on those he loved will never be forgotten and I hope to live a better life after this cruel wake up call. Life is short, nothing is guaranteed.
I love each and every one of you reading this. To the family, I cant help think how once Saturday is over for most people, this is done. I understand for you that this has no end, and I want to be here for you in any way I can, whether it be this week, next month or next year. We are all here for you and understand how difficult this must be. If you ever need anything, we are all here for you.
Rest in peace D. You didnt deserve this and we love you so much. ❤❤❤

I knew Derrius from his father Deese, and the Ly family being next door neighbors to my cousins house. The Ly family has known my family for the longest time and I remember the family-friend get togethers we would have as a kid, and seeing Derrius. Although, we werent close and I went to highschool with him, I had known how great of a family he had and how kind of a person he was. Sending love.

Thank you Derrius for being part of the Webb family, it was always fun watching you have fun, you were a competitive young guy playing basketball in the pool, it sure was fun watching all that, you will be greatly missed at the pool this summer, you were one of a kind guy for sure, and we are happy that you were part of our lives.

I remember meeting Derrius for the first time when he was preschool age. I remember specifically one afternoon at the coffee shop where he and Reyes sat at the bar, and we were playing some made up game, and the three of us could NOT stop laughing. That smile of his...it just got me every time. And the bond that he had with you, Zeka, (and the bond that he had with Reyes), it was just such a beautiful thing. I remember not being a mom yet myself and just being in awe of the love you three had. And then you went on to have this even bigger family with even more love, and I've just followed along through your pictures and our occasional chats as we randomly see each other. But watching Reyes grow into this amazing young man was so beautiful. I just feel so blessed to have known him.
I continue to pray for healing and peace for your family.

Thank you Derrius for loving our daughter, for being the "big brother" to Jett and putting up with all his crazy requests and pretty much doing whatever he wanted you to do. You were one of a kind and we will miss the heck out of you.
