Meryl "Jim" Smith

Meryl James Smith, 79, passed away January 27, 2023.

Jim was born February 28, 1943 in Des Moines, Iowa to his parent’s Beryl and Virginia (Fetter) Smith. He owned Metro Auto Salvage with his father for many years. Jim had a passion for finding scrap metal. He could look at a pile of iron and tell you exactly how much it weighed. Jim enjoyed NASCAR racing and being a member of the Moose Lodge.

Jim is survived by his fiancé, Laura White; children, Wanda Larson, Deana Smith, Tracy Smith, and Jason (Dawn) Mills; brother, Earl Smith; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and a host of other loving family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Jimmy; sister, Virginia Miller; and brother, Beryl Smith.

Family will greet friends Sunday, February 5, 2023 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street in Des Moines, Iowa. A memorial service will be held the following day Monday, February 6 at 1 p.m. also at the funeral home. Burial will take place following services at Elm Grove Cemetery, 6501 Indianola Avenue in Des Moines Iowa.
