Jon R. Kernes, Sr.

Jon Richard Kernes, Sr., 71, passed away Friday, January 27, 2023, at his home in Des Moines.

Jon was born October 24, 1951, in Des Moines, Iowa to Howard and Dorothy (Rhinehart) Kernes. He attended high school in Des Moines until he enlisted in the U. S. Army. He served honorably from December 23, 1968 until November 11, 1971. After his military service, he earned his GED and continued his education at Lincoln Technical Institute, where he obtained his degree in welding.

Jon was a welder for over 40 years for different organizations throughout the metro area. He enjoyed fishing, coon hunting, mushroom hunting, and hanging out with his buddies. His favorite pastime was spending time with his family.

Jon was a member of Lee Town Assembly of God Church. He was a man of great faith. He will be remembered as an intelligent, strong, and caring man. He had a tough exterior and a soft, caring side.

He is survived by his sons, Jon Kernes, Jr. (Jennifer), Jeremiah Kernes (Julie), and James Kernes (Delayna); daughters, Sarah Readout (Matt) and Stephanie Kernes; sixteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; siblings, Anna Rice, Howard Kernes (Jan), and David Kernes; as well as numerous extended family and friends.

Jon was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Dorothy Kernes; daughter, Christina Marie Kernes; and his brother, James Kernes.

Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by funeral service at 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 6, 2023 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Burial will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Iowa Veterans Cemetery.
