Francis Kay Carnine

Francis Kay Carnine, 80, passed away peacefully in Des Moines, Iowa on Friday, December 30, 2022, after a long battle with brain cancer, surrounded by her family who supported her through this journey.

Kay was born on June 28, 1942 in Sac City, Iowa. She was a life-long resident of Des Moines, where she raised her three children: Gary, Kristie, and Brian. She retired from her 27-year career at the Principal Financial Group in 2008. Kay loved gardening and dominating the slot machines at Prairie Meadows. She enjoyed discussions that involved extreme weather, politics, and existential conspiracy theories.

She is survived by her three children: Gary Carnine (Penny) of Adel, IA; Kristie (Carnine) Deiuliis of Brookline, MA; and Brian Carnine (Mollie) of Des Moines, IA; five beloved grandchildren: Tyler, Cassidy, Connor, Sirus, and, Gavin; her siblings Bill Spurling of Sac City, IA; Bob Spurling (Pat) of Thousand Oaks, CA; and Jean Cosby (John) of North Ridge, CA; and nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother (Mary) and father (Roscoe); sister Marlene Forrester of Palatine, IL; brother Jim of Carlisle, IA; sister-in-law Kip Spurling, niece Colleen Spurling of Sac City, IA; and her cat Petey.

Celebration of Life services will be held Wednesday, January 11, 2023 from 10 am – noon at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home at 5400 SW 9th Street in Des Moines, IA. Those wishing to honor her life can make a donation in her name to Unity Point Health Foundation – Taylor House Hospice.
