Sharon McKinney
December 31, 2022
Sharon Kay (Slawson) McKinney, 79, passed away peacefully on December 31st, 2022 at Accura Healthcare of Knoxville.
Sharon was born on January 4th, 1943 in Des Moines, IA where she was raised by her parents, Madelyn and Ted Smith. After graduating from North High School, Sharon would start her communications career at Northwestern Bell located downtown Des Moines. Northwestern Bell would change names multiple times throughout the years, but one thing that would not change was Sharon’s love for her high school sweetheart, Roger McKinney. The two were happily married 45 years.
Whether it was the sights and sounds of a casino, or the excitement of someone yelling “BINGO!!”, Sharon was captivated by the thrill. This would lead to another passion Sharon shared with friends and loved ones, travel. Adventures on cruises, South to Branson, West to Las Vegas, and of course Tulsa were just a handful of her favorite destinations. Those stories, memories, and in some cases funny photos, will live on for many years to come. She could never end a sentence without saying “Hear Me”.
As time passed, the ringing of a slot machine was often traded in for the laughter of grandchildren and great grandchildren. It wasn’t uncommon to see Sharon leading the charge during a holiday card game or a fast and furious game of spoons. Above all, it was her world-famous chocolate cake made especially for the most important people in her life that will be missed the most.
Sharon was preceded in death by her parents Madelyn and Ted Smith, loving husband Roger McKinney, brother Terry Slawson, and sister Judy Shaw. She is survived and cherished by her children Cindy (Tim) Stoll, Todd (Shelly) McKinney, grandchildren Kara (Adam) Waldorf, Kalvin (Tessa) Johnson, Keaton McKinney, Baylee Stoll (fiancé-Nathan Pritchard), Dalton Stoll, and great grandchildren Addison, Kade, Kennedy, Jordy, Gia and Tate. Sister Sandy (Bob) Williams.
Visitation will be at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., in Des Moines on Wednesday, January 11, 2023 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., with a graveside to follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Accura Healthcare of Knoxville, 606 N 7th St, Knoxville, IA 50138, in loving memory of Sharon.

Cindy & Todd I was sad to hear of your Moms passing. I remember living across from you on Hart. We lost touch, then I remarried & my husbands job required moves from IA to Indiana, Washington DC, California and finally back to Iowa living on Hart again but many blocks from my former home. A funny about Sharon is one time I stopped at her home & she invited me to the basement. I saw a huge pile of clothes on a rug in front of her washing machine. I said oh, youre doing laundry. She stated no thats what I did yesterday just need to fold them. Like everyone I, too remember her saying Hear Me. She was a jewel & a great friend.

Tears in my eyes for the loss of a very dear friend of 46 years. Sharon & I met in the hot tub at The Holiday Inn Holidome in Kansas City, Kansas..
I looked over at this darling boy in the hot Tub
and I said who is this handsome young man
Sharon, standing in the hot tub, puffed up like a Banty rooster mama and said that is my son Todd and my name is Sharon McKinney. We be came instant friends.
So, I need to say thank you to Todd MCKinney for
his handsome good looks as the catalyst for
Sharon and I meeting 46
Years ago. We continued
Our friendship into the night with our husbands and our children enjoying
Pizza together. We exchanged names and addresses and they came to Tulsa,Ok to visit us almost every year since!
I, like Sharon enjoyed going to bingo and going to the casino. Yes, Sharon we did hear you
Every time you said
Hear Me we would just smile and continue what ever we were doing.
Saying that I enjoyed our
Friendship for 46yrs is a understatement!
When we would travel to Iowa, we would laugh and go play bingo and of course Shoe shopping!
Sharon, loved shoe shopping no matter where she was, a cute story, comes to mind, on a shopping trip to the mall
One time a famous shoe store was going out of business, we skipped and grinned as we entered the close out shoe store.there were no shoes left in either of our shoe sizes but with determination we forged
ahead and each bought
2 pairs of shoes that were 2 sizes too big for us!!
Laughing as we came home to tell our husbands what a great buy we got on our shoes even thou they were too big for us!
Of course our husbands
Were rolling on the floor
Laughing till they cried!
So many many fun times with your mom Cindy & Todd, but just wanted to say from my heart, how sorry we are for your loss of your mom.
Sending hugs and prayers to you both and all of your family.
Rainbows & Blessings
With Love,
