Sharon Kae Hanson, 87, was born on December 1, 1935 to Eveline and Glen Lowder, in Des Moines, Iowa. She died after a lengthy battle with cancer on January 1st, 2023 at Wesley Acres Long Term & Hospice Care in Des Moines, Iowa.
Sharon graduated from East High School, working part time at NW Bell Telephone Company as a long distance operator. During her working years, she was employed at Oxberger & West Attorneys, Duffield, Penegar & Tapscott Attorneys, Polk County Courthouse and the Iowa Court of Appeals, where she was secretary to Judge Leo Oxberger, Chief Judge of the court and other judges. This was her favorite job; she had a lifelong interest in the law.
Her four children were the greatest joy of her life; for twenty-five years she was a full-time stay at home mother and mentor. These were the happiest years of her life. She is survived by all four children: Rex Allen (Sandra), Jamie, Julie and Cathy (Joe) Short. She was a grandmother to six and had three great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Shirley Warrick of Prescott, Arizona, her husband Dwayne and their children as well as numerous extended family.
Sharon volunteered for over 40 years at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in the ICU and surgical waiting room. She also worked with the car seat program, amassing more than 10,000 volunteer hours. She faithfully attended Simpson United Methodist Church at East 26th and Capitol her entire lifetime.
Holidays were very important to her, and she decorated the entire house for each one and sent cards to friends and family to celebrate. She also had a monthly theme for her outfits, hearts for February, jungle print for September etc.
Visitation will be on Friday, January 6, 2023, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave. in Des Moines with graveside services immediately following at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Memorial gifts can be directed to Simpson United Methodist Church or hospice.
