Service Details

Daniel Jessen Duus, 68, died Saturday, December 24, 2022 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born September 12, 1954 to Erik and Dagny (Jessen) Duus in Glenwood, Minnesota.

Dan graduated from Brainerd High School in Minnesota and was a member of First Lutheran Church in Brainerd. He worked for the Iowa Department of Corrections for 32 years where he was the Safety Director for staff and inmates in nine prisons and 22 community based facilities in the state. Dan was a fire fighter and paramedic for the Mitchellville Fire Department for ten years and taught many paramedic and OSHA classes.

Dan had the privilege to work on site activities at the World Trade Center following the 9/11 attacks. This experience filled him with pride and sadness to help his fellow mankind during such an atrocious event.

Dan enjoyed camping and hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park, both as a child and an adult. One of his more notable treks was hiking a large portion of Long’s Peak which is one of the 14ers in RMNP with his dad and brother. He loved spending time in the woods, duck and deer hunting, restoring old tractors, and above all, spending time with his family.

Dan is survived by his wife of 18 years, Denice; daughter, Shannon Duus; step-daughters, Alison (Charlie Notheis) Payne, Erin (Nathan) Hunt, and Elizabeth (Drew) Butler; grandchildren, Olive, Fritz, and Otto Notheis, Morgan and Nolan Hunt, and Paisley, Penny, Payne, and Pepper Butler; sister, Ava (Dennis) Hinz; brother, Mark (Marilyn) Duus; and a host of other family and beloved friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Erik and Dagny Duus; and niece, Jessica Duus.

A memorial visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, December 30, 2022 at Hamilton’s Mitchellville Funeral Home, 303 Center Avenue South, in Mitchellville.
