Arvella Machir

Arvella Hazel Machir, 84, of Des Moines, died on December 15, 2022, of complications of cancer treatments at UnityPoint Hospice - Taylor House. A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at Christ Lutheran Church, 6411 SE 5th Street, Des Moines at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 27, 2022, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines.

Arvella was born March 29, 1938 in Mason City, Iowa. She was a graduate of North High School in Des Moines. She worked for AMF Western Tool in manufacturing for many years, and also for Greyhound. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church for over 50 years, where she enjoyed knitting prayer shawls. Arvella loved fishing at her lake home and taught her grandchildren, nieces, and nephews how to fish. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family, and especially taking care of her grandchildren.

She is survived by her son, Morton E. Machir, Jr.; and her daughter, Cindra Swanson and her husband, Steven. Arvella has five wonderful grandchildren, Michael (Carolyn) Manning, Crystal Manning, Steven (Jenn) Machir, Samantha (Ryan) Tucker, and Morton Machir. She also has seven great-grandchildren, Grace Manning, Noah Manning, Ronan Tucker, Caleb Tucker, Gemma Machir, Thorin Machir, and Scarlett Machir. Arvella is also loved by her many nieces, nephews, and her sister-in-law, Charlotte.

Arvella was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Morton Machir, Sr.; their son, Steven H. Machir; her mother, Leila Gregory; and siblings, Lois, Charles, and Larry.
