Bert David Smith

Bert David Smith, 83, passed away on December 12, 2022, at the VA Central Iowa Health Care System. He was born in Des Moines on August 1, 1939, to Bert and Sarah (Sally) Smith.

Bert finished his education with the United States Army. He devoted decades of his life in service to America before retiring from the Iowa National Guard and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

He enjoyed a life of golfing, fishing, decorating his yard for any holiday, riding his motorcycle with the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club, having a pint to Irish music, and controlling the stroller at amusement parks.

Bert is survived by his wife and soulmate Kathy Smith; his brothers Chuck (Kris) Smith, and Leon Smith; his sisters Cheryl (Frank) Cartwright, Sally (Todd) Johnson, Deb (Bob) Fuerman, Nancy Saunders, and Mary Umbaugh; his children Michelle Stultz, Mark and Julie Smith, Mike Smith, Melissa Smith, and Bert and Stephanie Smith, and many loved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Sally and Bob Sellers, Olin Dodge, and Bert and Loretta Smith; his brothers Larry Smith and Steven Dodge; his sisters-in-law Barbara Smith and Judy Smith; his son-in-law Daniel, and his grandson Adam Smith.

A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, December 16, 2022 from 11a.m.-3 p.m. at West Des Moines Open Bible Church, 1100 Ashworth Road, West Des Moines, Iowa 50265. Family are encouraged to wear their favorite NFL team or come as you are.

Military Honors will be held at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery on March 17th of 2023.
