Service Details

Richard Lewis Higday, 90, walked into the arms of his loving Savior early Wednesday morning, December 14, 2022 at Edencrest at Beaverdale. He was born in Des Moines, Iowa on April 24, 1932, the son of Lewis and Helen (Wing) Higday.

Dick proudly served his country in the Korean Conflict in Japan with the United States Air Force. He worked for the United States Post office for 30 years until his retirement.

At the age of 16, Dick made the most important decision of his life, when he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior. That night began a relationship with the One whom he faithfully served for the remainder of his life. Dick was a long-time member of Anchor Baptist Church, formerly known as Grandview Park Baptist Church.

Dick attended a picnic on July 4, 1956, where he met a young lady named Jude’ Shawver. Jude’ was very active in the youth group at church where they were challenged to pray for specific service men. Jude’ had drawn Dick Higday’s name and had prayed fervently for him, even though they had never met. After a whirlwind courtship, they were married on January 27, 1957.

Dick is survived by his wife of almost 66 years, Jude’ Higday; a daughter, Lisa Butler Higday; son, Richard (Silvia) Higday; brother-in-law, Dick Mowery; nephews, Steven (Brenda) Mowery and Ernie Tomlinson; sisters-in-law, Jean Shawver and Jan Shawver; nephews, Perry (Channon) Shawver and Mike Shawver, as well as many other loving relatives and many special friends, especially Craig and Joelle Logemann.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Helen Higday; step-mother, Helen Higday; sister, Beverly Mowery and niece, Kathy Tomlinson.

Services will be on Saturday, December 17, 2022, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., in Des Moines. Visitation will be from 9-10 a.m., with a 10:00 a.m. service to follow. Burial will be in Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the United States Air Force Honor Guard and the Patriot Guard.

The family would like to thank the staff at Edencrest at Beaverdale and Suncrest Hospice Care (especially nurse, Erin) for their loving care for Dick in his final days.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Anchor Baptist Church Building Fund, in loving memory of Dick.
