Barbara A. "Barb" Vertz
December 11, 2022
Barbara A. “Barb” Vertz, beloved Mom, Ma, Grandma, Granny, Gram, and MeMa, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 11, 2022, surrounded by her family, at the age of 92.
Barb was born July 23, 1930, in Des Moines, Iowa to George and Alberta Mitchell. She was a lifetime member of the Boline Manfredi VFW Post 9662 Auxiliary. Barb volunteered at the Post for many years. She enjoyed attending the Thursday night dinners, as well as helping to host them, and was also involved in serving the funeral meals.
Barb enjoyed cooking, the outdoors, and spending time with her family. She loved the St. Louis Cardinals, especially her “little buddy”, Molina. Barb was very strong-willed and independent. She wanted things done right the first time, and if they weren’t, you would do it again under her watchful guidance! She was straight-forward and you always knew where you stood with her, along with being very giving and kind-hearted. She was the best of both worlds. Barb instilled hard work, family, and being truthful, no matter what. If you met Barb, you would never forget her. She was quite a lady!
Barb is survived by her daughter Vicki Shelton, son Rick (Ellen) Vertz, grandchildren Vanessa (Joe) Grant, Josh (Jonell) Shelton, Angela (John) Housley, and Jeremy (Kashmire) Vertz, ten great-grandsons and two great-granddaughters, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Denzel “Sonny”, daughter Linda Fisher, granddaughter Traci Fisher, and her sister Dorothy Knight.
Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by funeral service at 2:30 p.m., Friday, December 16, 2022, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, or an organization of the donors’ choice.
Condolences may be expressed at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.

So sorry for your families loss. The Vertzs lived on E 22nd St Ct and were neighbors to Ron & Rosie Snider. Nancy lived with the Sniders while I was in the Army and Vietnam. I say all of that because I didnt get to know the Vertzs until after I came home. There was never a time after that, until Denzels passing that we didnt wave to each other on E 22nd Ct or any other place we would pass each other. The Vertzs were always together and going someplace and apparently so were we. Then I discovered Vicki worked with my mom so another connection was made with the Vertzs. Remember the past and cherish your memories. We will of the Vertz family.
