Service Details

Don was born July 27, 1950 at Decatur County Hospital in Leon, Iowa to Eugene and Wilma Waller, the second of six children. He passed away on December 9, 2022 at Mercy One. After spending his early years in northern Missouri and southern Iowa he moved with his family to Des Moines. During high school he worked at Hinky Dinky Grocery, where he developed friendships that would remain throughout his life. He graduated from Des Moines Technical High School in 1969. Following graduation, he started working at Den-Tal-Ez Manufacturing. Upon their closure he worked for Iowa Parcel, where he once again developed lifelong friendships. After leaving Iowa Parcel he worked at Globe Machinery for over twenty years. Following his time at Globe, he returned to trucking, driving for ACE Lines until they were sold, and then H & W Trucking for a short time before settling in at Yellow Freight, driving for them for over twenty years. Don retired in 2012, but soon decided retirement wasn’t for him. Soon after he started working at Beaver Creek Golf, a job he often described as the best, as it allowed him to be outdoors and to participate in and play the game he dearly loved. Friends would say “He shot the bull as often as he shot the ball”

A number of years ago Don learned to SCUBA dive and spent many enjoyable trips to Belize with close friends to dive in the Caribbean. He also enjoyed going on light house tours. He was a member of the Harbor Lights Society and had a significant collection of light houses.

Don is survived by his sisters, Margaret (Steve) Drahaus of Ankeny, Linda (Orval) Bullock of Hendersonville, NC, Joanne (Chris) Willis of Northwood, IA, and Mary Waller of Des Moines and brother Randy Waller of Des Moines. He is also survived by his niece, nephews, great niece, great nephews, aunts, uncles and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his nephew, Jonathan Drahaus.

Per Don’s request he has been cremated and a memorial service will be held during the warmer months of summer.
