Grace Tennie (Johnson) Bain, 89, passed away peacefully Wednesday, December 7, 2022, at Glen Oaks Alzheimer’s Specialty Care, Urbandale.

Grace was born on a farm west of Randall, Iowa on March 5, 1933, to Willie and Alta (Olson) Johnson. After the passing of her father, the family moved to Roland. She graduated from Roland High School.

While working at the Memorial Union in Ames, Iowa, she met the love of her life, Duane Bain. They were married in Roland on July 14, 1957. To this union two daughters were born – Kristine and Diane.

Grace spent her life being a loving wife and mother. She enjoyed baking and baked cookies weekly. After her daughters were grown, Grace worked at Younkers for five years. She enjoyed being a grandma and was involved in their lives.

In later life she enjoyed riding the tandem bicycle with Duane and rode on several RAGBRAI. Duane and Grace enjoyed traveling. They traveled to Norway, Sweden and Denmark with their daughter, Kristine. They also liked to take bus tours with her sister and brother-in-law, and traveled around the United States.

Grace collected angels and Precious Moments, and amassed a collection. She was an active member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church and served on the altar guild and as a greeter.

Grace is survived by her daughters, Kristine (Jack) Shepard-Bain and Diane (Eric) Christensen; three grandchildren, Marie, Helena, and Devin; two nieces, Teresa Olson and Colleen Louw; brother-in-law, Dean Henry; and several relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Duane; her parents, Willie and Alta Johnson; her in-laws, Wayne and Jeanette Bain; and her sister, Carolann Henry.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 13, 2022, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 2600 E Euclid Avenue, Des Moines. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 14, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. also at the church, and will be followed by burial at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church or the Alzheimer’s Association Iowa Chapter.
