Doris N. Long
November 27, 2022
Doris N. Long, 92, of Des Moines passed away November 27, 2022, at Scottish Rite Park. She was born April 15, 1930, in Ottumwa, Iowa to Ross and Emma McAllister.
Doris loved to work and she excelled at it. She thrived on the social interaction and the satisfaction of a job well done. She was the receptionist extraordinaire for over 30 years for Dr. George Caudill’s pediatric allergy practice. When retirement didn’t stick, Doris became an award-winning salesperson at JC Penney’s at Southridge for over 15 years. Finally, she was the “sample lady” at HyVee on Fleur Drive well into her late 80s.
Doris was devoted to her family. She married the love of her life, high school sweetheart, Sam, on July 14, 1950. Together they raised three sons, Mike, Mark, and Doug. Doris was fiercely protective and supportive of her boys. Having lived with all those men for so long, Doris was rewarded with five granddaughters, whom she cherished and spoiled. And visits from her seven great-grandchildren were a continuing source of joy and pride.
Surviving are two sons, Mark (Beth) of Clive and Doug (Tammy) of Bloomington, MN; five granddaughters, Keaton (Scott) Pulver, Kelsey (Devin) James, Kelli (James) Miller, Morgan (Mohamed) Long, and Alli (Scott) Brown; seven great-grandchildren, Stella, Abbott, Madden, Milo, McCoy, Malcolm, and Archer; and daughter-in-law, Ann Long.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam; son, Mike; three brothers, Jess, Floyd, and James; and two sisters, Maxine Long and Mae Reinier.
Doris will be deeply missed and long remembered.
No funeral services are currently scheduled. A family celebration is planned for spring. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Scottish Rite Park in Des Moines.

Very sorry about her passing. Her husband, Sam, was one of my teacher's at Lincoln High, and a co-worker with my step-father, Alfred L. Ackelson, in the City of DSM Parks Dept. Sam was a summer mower around town.

Mark and Doug, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. Your mom was so special to all of the Caudills. I had the pleasure of working next to her at the office. She was always so kind, patient and funny! It was delightful to watch her interact with the small children who loved coming around the counter for a loving hug. I hope your memories of her bring you and your families peace at this sad time. Love to you both.
