Sallie Jane Stahl-Walczak, 82, passed away November 20, 2022. A celebration of her life will be held at Plymouth Place, 4111 Ingersoll in Des Moines, IA on Tuesday December 20th, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. with a brief program at 5:00 p.m.

Sallie was born October 28, 1940 in Carbondale, IL to Jessie (Harrell) and Loren Taylor. As a young girl, she developed many hobbies which continued into adulthood. These interests included golf, playing the piano, and cooking. After graduating with a degree in Home Economics from Southern Illinois University, Sallie became a teacher at the high school level in LaGrange, IL prior to starting a family. She always put her kids, Lance and Jason, first and emphasized the importance of education in their upbringing. Leading by example, she obtained her Master’s Degree in Vocational Education with an emphasis on Foods and Nutrition. This allowed her to teach at the collegiate level at Illinois State University while raising two boys. When she wasn’t working, Sallie put a priority on her kid’s activities, volunteering as the team mother or working within their respective classrooms as a homeroom parent. Her work ethic, strength, and perseverance left a lasting impression on her family and those who knew her.

As her sons became adults, Sallie worked in retail at numerous companies in the Chicago area, eventually moving to Des Moines, IA to be closer to family. In 2008, she moved to Plymouth Place. In her early years at Plymouth Place, she organized many activities for residents including Coffee Club and Coloring Club. Coloring became a hobby that continued until the end.

Sallie was preceded in death by her parents, Jessie (Harrell) and Loren Taylor; as well as her husband, Edward Walczak. She is survived by her sons, Lance (Jodi) Stahl of West Des Moines, IA and Jason (April) Stahl of Henderson, NV; her four grandchildren, Emma, Eli, Cooper, and Carter; her brother, Dr. Richard Taylor (Alice) of Corpus Christi, Texas; and her nephews, Richard and Robert Taylor of Dallas, Texas.
