John Mascaro, Jr.
November 21, 2022
John Mascaro, Jr., 53, passed away on November 21, 2022, at Unity Point Iowa Methodist Medical Center.
John was adopted at birth by John Sr. and Anna Mascaro. He was born with a smile on his face and loved to laugh always. John never lost that smile or laugh, even when life challenged him the most. John was often in pain and discomfort because of his connective tissue disorder, Ehlers-Danlos, but you would never have known it.
John had many talents that included wood and metalworking. He loved to draw and was quite an artist. John loved music and participated in the high school marching band and jazz band as a trumpet player.
John graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1987. He spent his first few years after graduation working as a tool and die lathe operator for different companies until he found his current position in the maintenance department at A.E. Dairy. John worked all shifts and lots of overtime through the years and had been with A.E. for 24 years. He had many lasting friendships there.
John was also a devoted family man. While working overnights he helped to raise his beloved stepchildren, Xander Lehman and Devin Roach.
John’s passions included the open road on his Harley Davidson and many times doing “Poker Runs” for charity. He could also be found restoring old Ford Broncos, Sprint Car Racing, and enjoying sunsets on the water while fishing. John bought his dream acreage near Knoxville, Iowa in 2020 and loved every minute he spent there.
John was a man among men. Always seeking a peaceful resolution to the conflict. He smiled always and laughed often. He cried and struggled too. John was always uplifting others and giving with an open heart. His compassionate empathy, unconditional loving spirit for people, animals, and the life he loved will be his enduring legacy. We honor him for all that he was and what he did and gave so selflessly and he will forever be remembered as Kimberly’s hero and little brother.
John is survived by his beautiful loving girlfriend, Treva Olson of Ankeny; stepchildren, Xander Lehman and Devin Roach, both of Des Moines; uncle, Angelo (Patty) Mascaro of Winterset; aunt, Pamela Little of Centerville: sister, Kimberly Mascaro of Des Moines; many cousins and friends; and his beloved dog, CoCo.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Angelo Sr. and Mary Mascaro and Curtis and Martha Cardwell; father, John Mascaro, Sr.; mother, Anna Mascaro; and his beloved dogs, Harley, Tasha, and Lela.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Wounded Warrior Project, or American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) in loving memory of John.

Just before he left forever that Friday, he announced to me that he was going to be coming in BOTH days of his weekend off to work with me.
Wasnt hard to make John laugh so to show my appreciation, thats what I set out to do, asking, whats WRONG with you in feigned hostility that never failed to catch him out and amuse him .
But I was taken aback when a subdued, unexpected smile revealed the very same glow around his eyes, lighting up his face that many a hearty laugh had done so many times before
And he said (simply and modestly enough to briefly evoke my OWN humility), I like working with you: I enjoy learning stuff from ya.
We BOTH smiled a smile that only NOW seemed to have lingered.
See ya tomorrow, John.

Gosh. Hard to believe your gone. What the heck....life is so unfair. I was just thinking about you yesterday when a picture came up of all of the wood that you chopped for me. You are such a great guy and would help anybody at any time. This hurts and will continue to hurt for quite some time.
