Maxine Nelson

Maxine Nelson, age 87, passed away on Sunday, November 13, 2022 at Valley View Village in Des Moines of natural causes. She was born on December 18, 1934 in Albia, Iowa.

Maxine attended Albia Schools during elementary school. Her family moved to Des Moines where she graduated from East High School in 1953. Maxine was united in marriage to Theodore (Ted) Nelson while in high school. Ted and Maxine lived in Arlington VA while Ted was in the Navy, stationed in Washington DC. They moved back to Des Moines following his discharge. After returning to Des Moines Maxine attended AIB for accounting. Maxine was employed at multiple financial institutions in Des Moines throughout her career. In 1962 Maxine welcomed her son Michael. Ted and Maxine enjoyed spending summers at their lake home on Lake Ponderosa with many extended family and friends. After retirement Ted and Maxine spent several winters in Arizona. They also enjoyed traveling, especially visiting Michael and his family at multiple bases he was stationed at in the army. They returned to Des Moines permanently in their older years to be closer to family.

She is lovingly survived by her son Michael (Bridget) Nelson, grandchildren Michael (Claudia) Nelson Jr, Tiffany Nelson, Cora Nelson, and Harper Nelson, great-grandchildren Lucy Nelson, Quinn Wright, and Bliss Moreno, sister Geraldine Wilson, and several nieces & nephews.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents Cora Walraven & William Smith, her husband Theodore “Ted” Nelson, and siblings William Smith, Jr., and Wiladean Smith, and step-brother Homer Brown.
