Richard "Dick" Salyers
November 02, 2022
Dick was born in Des Moines, IA, on August 31, 1942 to Terrell and Velma Salyers.
Dick grew up on the southside of Des Moines along with his parents and older brother Larry. He attended Des Moines Technical High School, where he met his future wife Nancy. On February 8th, 1963, Dick and Nancy were joined in marriage and shortly thereafter moved to Long Beach, CA, where there son Ric was born in October of 1964. After returning to Des Moines from California, Dick and Nancy were blessed with a baby girl Kelly in May of 1969.
In 1974, Dick started at John Deere and moved the family to Altoona. This is where Dick’s love for sports and children would come together. Dick would coach his children and many others in softball, baseball, and basketball. Through these activities Dick was able to touch many young lives in life and sports. As much as he loved winning it was never about that when coaching his “kids.” All he ever wanted was for all of them to feel included and to have fun. He accomplished that and so much more!!
Whenever the town needed a Santa Claus, an extra cheerleader, or someone to announce the Tractor Pulls, Dick could never say no. When Jacob, Jordan, and Cade came along as grandchildren they became the apples of his eye and the ones he could never say no to. His love for them was boundless and they will forever miss him.
After 80 years of living, almost 60 years of marriage and many, many memories. Dick left this world on November 2nd, 2022. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Larry, and daughter Kelly. He is survived by his loving wife Nancy, son Ric (Carmen), and grandchildren Jacob (Holly), Jordan (T.J.), and Cade.
We will not say goodbye, just until we see you again, GO HAWKS!
Services will be held on Thursday, November 10, 2022 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. followed by funeral service at 3:00 p.m.
