Hazel Hines
October 26, 2022
Hazel Hines, 95, went home to be with the Lord on October 26, 2022, at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines. She was born July 8, 1927, in Des Moines, Iowa to Earl and Alzina Hindal.
Hazel was united in marriage to William Hines on June 7, 1946, at her parents’ home on the east side of Des Moines. On a Sunday afternoon in the mid 1950’s, Hazel was led to the Lord by Bill’s sister Jackie as she knelt down by the couch at Grandma and Grandpa Hines’ house and asked Jesus to be her Savior. Bill was very upset that day and as family recalls it was a silent ride home. Following a series of events in Bill’s life he accepted Jesus as his Savior and together they dedicated their lives to serving God. They attended Grandview Park Baptist Church where they were baptized and most recently Altoona Regular Baptist Church.
Hazel worked in the treasury department at the state house and as her kids grew she began her career as a baker with the Des Moines Public Schools, serving for over 25 years. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, painting, and going to bakeries. Hazel loved camping, traveling and cooking, especially for her family. She spent her Friday nights with a group of friends that called themselves “The Gang”. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family.
Hazel is survived by her sons, Dennis (Joyce) Hines and Randy (Gale) Hines; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 8 great great-grandchildren; and brother, Archie (Betty) Hindal. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William; daughter, Janet Hines; and 8 siblings.
Services will be at Altoona Regular Baptist Church, 803 3rd Ave SW, in Altoona on Tuesday, November 1, 2022. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. with service to follow at 2:00 p.m. Burial will take place at the Mitchellville Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family in loving memory of Hazel.

Family and friends.....so sorry for my loss, Aunt Hazel. Times we spent together was a joy for me. I gave her perms and she told me it kept her wig in place better. Oh my the stories of Hindal and Hines families went on and on. Being my mom's sister (Phyllis Slaughter) when the whole tribe was in town they got together and played SkipBo and cackled through the night. Gonna miss you. ❤ LOVE, DIANA
