Karen Sue “Toodie” Smith, age 77, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 21, 2022 at Bishop Drumm Care Center in Johnston, Iowa. She battled dementia for the past five years. She was helped in her final stages by Kindred Hospice.

Toodie was born October 27, 1944 in Des Moines, Iowa to Benjamin and Mildred (Porter) Plummer. She worked as an office manager during her working years for Campbell’s Heating and Cooling. She began volunteering at the voting polls and was hired on in a permanent position. She finished her career with Polk County Election Offices. She was a member of Iowa Kate Shelley Doll Club where she served as an officer in all positions. Toodie loved and cared for all animals, whether they were her pets or animals that found their way into her yard. She was crafty and enjoyed making Christmas Ornaments. She was a fantastic cook and loved having family dinners. Toodie was a devoted wife to her husband, James Smith, and was a loving caretaker to all in need. She was truly an Earth Angel.

She is survived by her nieces, Lea Ann (Phil) Gale and Jody (Larry) Stonehocker; great-nephew, Mick Noble; sisters-in-law, Jeannette (Jim) Russell and JoAnn Morey; as well as many other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and many friends.

Toodie was preceded in death by her husband, Jim; parents, Benjamin and Mildred Plummer; brother, Tom Plummer; and great-nephew, Mitch Blanchard.

Services will be held on Friday, October 28, 2022 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m. followed by funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Burial will take place at Laurel Hill Cemetery after the service and will be followed by a reception at the funeral home.
