Lawrence Gene Wineland, age 87, passed away peacefully at Taylor House Hospice on October 2, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Iowa City on November 29, 1935, the son of Lawrence and Elizabeth Wineland.

Following high school graduation, he entered the Army National Guard in 1953 where he served until his honorable discharge in 1956.

Larry was united in marriage to Doris Burdess on June 5, 1953, at Osceola Christian Church. To this union, three children were born: Terri, Douglas, and Dennis. He and Doris shared 67 wonderful years of marriage until her passing in 2021.

Throughout his career, Larry held various positions and worked for a number of companies. He started as a miller at Saylor Elevator, then he worked as a mechanic at Porter’s Garage, and then spent the next 25 years as a pressman for multiple printing companies. Later, Larry was a driver for DX Oil Company and Dee Zee Manufacturing, and finished his career as a school bus driver.

Larry was an Elder and faithful member of Highland Park Christian Church where he served in many positions and belonged to the Pilots class. He volunteered countless hours as firefighter with the Saylor Township Fire Department between 1950-1980.

Together with Doris, he enjoyed traveling, camping, tending to the vegetable garden, and square dancing.

Larry is survived by his children, Terri Joelson (Iner), Doug Wineland (Daniela), and Dennis Wineland (Robin); 15 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild; as well as other loving family and many special friends.

In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his loving wife, Doris; granddaughter, LaTasha Wineland in Feb. 2011; and 3 siblings, Charles Wineland, Arwilda “Tillie” White-Cope, and Calvin Wineland (Eulah).

A celebration of life service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 8, 2022, at Highland Park Christian Church, 4260 NW 6th Drive, Des Moines.
