Mary Jo Kain

Mary Jo Kain, age 86, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 25, 2022.

Mary Jo was born November 26, 1935 in Garden Grove, Iowa to Clarence and Ruth (McCullough) Reynolds. Mary Jo cared for her family deeply she showed that in many ways such as opening her home for loved ones when needed, making amazing Sunday and holiday dinners with her homemade noodles, roast, and her pineapple upside down cake. Let’s not forget her tacos and potato salad!

She was a caregiver, which was a natural fit for her 25 years as a Home Health aid. She was very proud of this work and spoke about it often.

She loved all things cats, she loved and cared for her cats over the years and had many cat figurines, pictures, and stuffed animals all throughout her house. She also loved showing off her collection of amazing crystal and glassware. She called all these things “Her Pretty’s”. Her love for rose bushes and flowers was also apparent in the amazing flowers outside her house.

Mom was the glue that held the family together. Her love for family has cared for so many of us over the years. She loved and was loved by many, she will be missed.

She is survived by her sons, Scott Kain (Dora) and Mike Kain; nine grandchildren, Dawn, Casey, Shawn, Danny, Carrie, Jason, Eric, Nick and Alexis; and many great-grandchildren.

Mary Jo was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin; daughter, Valerie Thompson; and grandson, Joey.

Services will be held on Saturday, October 1, 2022 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. and will be followed by a luncheon.
