Walter Edmond Johnson, 93, passed away on September 25, 2022 at Arbor Springs in West Des Moines, Iowa. He was born in Palmyra, MO, on August 3, 1929, to Arvil Johnson and Ruby Kelly Johnson. He was one of 13 siblings.
Walt has lived in Iowa since 1972 following his retirement from the Air Force after serving 23 years. After his retirement from the Air Force, Walt Joined the West Des Moines School District and became the Director of Transportation for 20 years, retiring in 1993. Walt enjoyed time with family and friends. He and his wife served faithfully in their church for many years in various departments. The Johnsons always made room in their home to welcome visiting pastors from overseas and friends near and far. To many he was simply known as “Dad” or “Grandpa” and to some as “Captain”. Walt and Andreana enjoyed traveling in their retirement years, camping, and spending winters in Arizona.
Walt is survived by his son, William (Bud) Johnson (Dueana); grandchildren Joel Johnson and Jennifer Johnson (Wesley Moore). His daughter Lurindia Johnson, passed the same day. He is preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Andreana, twin daughters, Lugwena and Edwina Johnson, who died at birth, his parents and several siblings.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 1, 2022, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines. Family will greet friends at the funeral home one hour prior to service time. A private burial will be held at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Suncrest Hospice or Local VFW, 3601 Beaver, Des Moines, Iowa 50310.

My Dear dear brother Walt. I cant begin to express how sad I am to hear of your passing. I hold so many fond memories of our bantering back and forth. I regret that I will not be able to attend your funeral as I am in South Carolina right now. Bud just know my heart is there with you and the family .... I will forever love you guys.
