Larry LaVerne Hackbarth
of West Des Moines, Iowa

Larry Hackbarth, age 88, passed away on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 at Karen Acres Healthcare Center in Urbandale. He was born the son of Elmer & Ruth (Sheppard) Hackbarth on November 15, 1933 in Hampton, Iowa.

Larry spent his early childhood living with his parents in several train depots in north central Iowa where his dad worked for the railroad. In his high school years, Larry worked at the grain elevator in Iowa Falls and at a corn packing plant where he developed a strong work ethic.

Larry graduated from Iowa Falls High School, and then later attended Ellsworth Community College and Wartburg College, where he was a talented trumpet player and sat first chair. Larry played his trumpet in a band that traveled and played at different events in the area. He also attended The University of Iowa for a year prior to taking a job as a bank examiner with the State of Iowa. During these years he married the love of his life, Harriet on August 2nd, 1957, on her 22nd birthday, they lived in Waterloo, Iowa. Larry later took a position at Union State Bank in Bridgewater, Iowa where they moved and raised their three children. Larry worked at Union State Bank until his retirement.

In his early years, Larry played city softball and was coached by his dad, Elmer. He later became his kids and grandkids biggest fan, supporting them in all of their activities. Larry loved taking summer trips to Okoboji, riding motorcycles and celebrations with family. He had a passion for shooting sports and one of the biggest highlights was shooting a bear on a hunting trip in Canada. His greatest love was his family.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving children Holly Trulson, Hal (Alison) Hackbarth, and Heather Hackbarth, grandchildren Broderick Trulson, Samuel (Makayla Buck) Hackbarth, Elizabeth Trulson, Daniel Hackbarth, Benjamin Trulson, and Joel Hackbarth, as well as many other loving family members and friends.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, and beloved wife Harriet.

Visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 16, 2022, with funeral service following at 11:00 a.m., at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Burial will take place at Union Cemetery in Iowa Falls.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer society Russell and Ann Gerdin Hope Lodge, Iowa City, or the NRA as a nod to his love of hunting and shooting sports.
