Gene Arnold Albers

Gene A. Albers, 89, passed away on August 31, 2022, in Des Moines. He was born in Des Moines, on February 23, 1933, to Robert and Alice Albers.

Gene attended East High School until enlisting in the United States Navy. He proudly served his country from 1950-1954 during the Korean War as a Radarman Second Class on the US John W. Thompson. Upon Gene’s honorable discharge, he worked in a civilian military position as an Aviation Foreman for the United States Navy at the Navy Aviation Depot on the North Island.

Gene was an avid reader and enjoyed fishing, traveling, and going out to eat. He was an active member of VFW Post 738, the Elks Lodge, as well as the American Legion Baldwin-Patterson Post 274. Gene had a generous heart and was always giving to everyone around him His love for his family was shown in the many years he spent taking care of his sister, Mary Jo.

Gene is survived by his siblings, Mary Jo Albers and Larry (Aleen) Albers; nieces and nephews, Jeanette (Kevin) Champion, Scott (Angela) Albers, and Wendi (Brandon) Young; as well as other extended family. Gene was preceded in death by his brother, Robert; and nephew, Kevin.

Burial will be held at Iowa Veterans Cemetery at 9:30 a.m., on September 30, 2022.

Gene was a member of American Legion post 274 and VFW post 738. I served with Gene on many honor guard funerals and color guards. He was always fun to be around and will be missed by all his fellow veterans. My he rest in peace.
