Patricia Mullen Hulting
August 29, 2022
The delightful spirit of Patricia Mullen Hulting left its earthly bounds on Monday, August 29, 2022. She was surrounded by her family and loved ones as she peacefully slipped away. A celebration of her life will be held on Thursday, September 8, 2022 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, IA from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service and sharing of memories at 6:30 p.m.
Pat was born May 8, 1948 in Waterloo, Iowa to Peg and Gene Mullen. In 1966, she graduated from Don Bosco High School as Valedictorian and later from the University of Iowa with a BA degree in English and emphasis in Creative Writing. In 1975, she received her JD also from the University of Iowa and then opened her first law office in Muscatine, IA. In 1981, she joined the Iowa Attorney General’s Office and was assigned duties in the Social Services division as an Assistant Attorney General. After she left government legal service, Pat entered into private practice until her retirement. During her career she was well respected by many colleagues, but John Roehrick stood out as her legal mentor and law partner. In 2010, Pat was honored by the Polk County Bar Association for her Pro Bono work. This award was in recognition for her volunteer hours of legal assistance to Iowans in need for the 5th Judicial District. She also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and was a previous board member.
Pat purchased Michael’s Restaurant of Des Moines in 2010, and along with her son Jon, established a popular and thriving pizza shop.
In her free time, Pat relished traveling! One great adventure involved a full day of transport into the hills of Mexico carrying lace for a wedding dress and riding the last 10 miles on the back of a donkey. But Pat’s favorite travels were with her dear friend, Sister Molly Munoz, to Ireland and cruises off Florida.
Pat was a devoted mother to Jon and a dear friend to many. She will be greatly missed by her son, Jonathon (Lindsey Smith) Ingram; her sister, Mary (Rich) DeJana; her brother, John (Jeanne) Mullen; Dana Ingram, father of Jon; her nieces and nephews; dear friend Sister Molly, and her wide group of friends and associates.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Daniel and Michael Mullen.
Memorials may be directed to the Michael Mullen Scholarship Fund at Don Bosco High School, Gilbertville, Iowa and condolences expressed at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.

I was not aware of Pat's death until randomly looking at the internet. Pat was a mentor of mine when I worked as intern for her in Muscatine while in Law School. We later worked together in the Iowa Attorney General's Office. After many years she invited me to visit her at the family's restaurant and I met her son and got up to date. Having left town I missed her for a long time and am sad my one recent pre-Covid visit was my last chance to see her.

Pat was my very best friend, We met in NYC at the Democratic Convention in 1980, and we have been family ... "sisters" ... ever since. She helped me with my kids when I was a single parent.. She stood with me as I faced the challenges of Democratic Party leadership. She was also the very best cook, making all kinds of complicated foods for the XMAS parties we co-hosted. COVID got in the way of my being there to say a last good-bye, but she'll always be in my heart.

I always appreciated Pat's wisdom and forthrightness, as well as her dedication to the underdog. I will miss her insight. Thinking of Pat's family and friends at this difficult time.

Throughout elementary school, I could not win a spelling bee because of Patricia. And her seriousness was sometimes a downer for the rest of us. But I would not give up my good memories of growing up next door to Patricia and the Mullens. You all were a huge influence on my life. Thank you all for your friendship. My regret was that I did not maintain a connection. I am sorry for your loss.
