Dennis Alden Whitney
August 28, 2022
Dennis Alden Whitney, 60, of Des Moines, Iowa passed away at home on August 28, 2022. He was born in Fremont, California on November 14, 1961 to Follice Cecil and Ardith Colleene (King) Whitney. After living in California, Kentucky, and Indiana, the family settled in Des Moines. Graduating from Des Moines Technical High School in 1979 with a course major in aviation, he flew his first solo flight at age 16 and received his private pilot license soon after. Dennis often flew his parents to visit out of state relatives and even flew his dad to view auto parts for muscle cars he and his brother enjoyed restoring.
Moving to California in his early twenty’s, he became an auto body painter for a few years. Dennis then asked his dad to guide him in learning the construction trade, becoming a union carpenter in Southern California. After returning to Iowa, he met Jane Leydens. They married October 6, 1996 and became parents to Dustin and Garrett. In a change of occupations, he joined the international Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 55 in Des Moines, Iowa. He retired November of 2019 to spend more time enjoying the rewards for years of hard work.
His passions included camping, boating, sailing, fishing, scuba diving, and flying. Dennis also enjoyed comedies, cooking and eating his favorite foods (Mexican, Sushi & good old home cooking known to the family as “stuff”). He was fond of many types of music from rock, blues, reggae, new wave, and country. Dennis went on to become an excellent country dancer after initially just wanting to make it once around the dance floor at Denny Arthur’s. His favorite dance partners were his mom and longtime friend Charlotte.
He was proceeded in death by his father and grandparents.
He is survived by his wife, Jane; sons Dustin and Garrett; and mother, Ardith Colleene all of Des Moines, Iowa; brothers, Don of Denison, Iowa and Douglas of Simi Valley, California.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, October 8, 2022 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at IBEW Local Union 55, 1435 NE 54th Avenue Des Moines, Iowa. Take exit 136 off of I-80 head north on NE 14th Street to the second stoplight. The Union Hall is located on the south east corner of the intersection. I have recently lost someone who was very close to me and my family. My dads best friend Dennis. Even though by blood he was not family he was one of the closest things to family anyone could be. throughout my life as i was growing up i never saw dennis as a family friend i saw him as family. i saw him as a uncle. Majority of my memories with him were camping, watching his sons soccer games, very long nights of him and my dad sitting at the kitchen table playing cards until the early hours of the night. and so so so many bonfires. i rember as a kid going camping with the whitney gang and waking up the next morning to dennis and my dad still sitting around the fire talking. telling you some of the funniest stories you could ever hear. even though i dont get to talk to him anymore, there hasnt been a day that has passed that i havent thought about him and his family. and the hundreds of stories and memories weve shared throughout the years. i will always be extremely greatly for all of them. and i will never forget all the wonderful advice and life lessons they have taught me over the years and the many more to come, and to my uncle den i hope you are sitting up there around a fire watching down on all of us.
thank you for all of the wonderful memories and laughs - sammy girl❤

Where do I begin when being blessed by a brother like Den. A brother, a son, a husband, a father & a loyal friend... you were all of them.
Adventurous with "No Fear" long before it was a catchphrase. If it had an engine, you'd be the first to jump on without reservation. Minibikes, motorcycles, go carts, tractors, cars, boats, planes... the faster the better! Climbing higher & diving deeper, you experienced it all.
Easy to talk to and leaning on each other throughout our lives. Comfortable in your own skin, never trying to be someone you weren't. Always supportive & willing to help whether family or friend... and most friends felt like family. You always said you didn't think you'd make it to 30 and now 60 years was much too soon with many dreams & adventures still unfulfilled. I'll miss the jokes that started with your laugh even before they were told. Just one more call to hear you say "I love you bro"! So many memories and so much pain from this unexpected loss.
We'll love & miss forever.

Over the past 59 years, we shared hundreds of adventures together. You could somehow see humor in almost everything, always making me laugh & smile. I also learned a lot from you. You literally gave me the shirt off your back along with several boat loads of great & funny memories Thank you for that! I was very blessed to have a cool brother like you. I will miss you deeply & love you forever Dennis.
