Alan L. Lander
August 27, 2022
Alan Luverne Lander, 71, residing in Des Moines, Iowa passed away on August 27, 2022, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center following complications of a heart attack.
Alan was born May 6, 1951 in Des Moines, Iowa. He was the son of Merlin and Mabel Lander. He graduated from North High School in 1969, and obtained a B.A. and M.A. in education. He taught for more than 28 years in Des Moines Public Schools before he retired in 2011.
He met his wife Donna when they were 16 years old at Union Park United Methodist Church in Des Moines, where he was a lifelong member. They married May 27, 1972 and had two daughters, Heather and Hollie.
Alan was a devoted father, husband and an awesome Papa to his grandchildren. He enjoyed coaching his daughters’ softball teams and loved watching them play. He loved fishing at Camp Wesley Woods, where he and his family camped and volunteered. He also built model trains and bowled in an after-school teachers’ league. He had a dry sense of humor, and always could be counted on for a witty response.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Barb Sumers, and his father and mother-in-law. He is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Donna and his beloved dog, Chloe May. He is also survived by his daughter Heather (Steve) Campbell of Indianola and their children Alissa (Jesse), Ashley (Levi), and Nicholas and his daughter Hollie (Kurt) Knake of Syracuse, Nebraska and their children, Camden, Colin, Jordan, Kaden, and Kirsten. He also leaves behind several nieces, a nephew, cousins, and many lifelong friends.
The family will receive visitors on Thursday September 1 from 5-8 p.m. at Hamilton’s Funeral Home near Highland Memory Gardens. Funeral services will be held Friday September 2 at 11 a.m. at Union Park United Methodist Church, with a luncheon immediately following. Interment will be at Highland Memory Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made in Alan’s name to Union Park United Methodist Church or Camp Wesley Woods.

I consider myself fortunate to have known St. Alan. I got to know the Landers through AirBnB. I was always welcomed at their home. We always had great laughs together. Altoona, Iowa was my second home. All I can say is, we lost a great human being. I will miss talking to Alan.

I have such good memories of teaching in a trailer with Alan at Lincoln South. He had a wonderful sense of humor, and was one of the kindest people I have ever met. He spoke of Donna and the rest of his family with such love - it was beautiful.

To Donna, Heather,, Hollie and their families we are sorry for you loss. Alan will be missed. Alan was a great friend and teacher. I worked with him at Central Campus. We went to many events and activities together. We had monthly lunches and went on the Chain Gang bike rides and other rides. The last time Alan and I were together we talked about two bikes. A Marshalltown bike trail fundraiser where we set an all time speed record going downhill on the Lincoln Highway at 65 mph with cars passing us a foot to our left. We decided not to do that again! The other was one of several BRRR Rides. We were three blocks from the end when we hit an ice patch and crashed. His sense of humor and positive attitude was always uplifting. We will miss him.

Donna, Heather, Hollie and the entire family,
We were so sorry to hear about Alan. I have know him all of my life. Back in the day he was on the ball team at church, drove the bus, participated in mission trips and I had him as a substitute teacher at East. He loved our UPUMC youth, took them on trips and often hosted, with Donna, the youth meals and parties at their home. He mentored Trevor during confirmation and was just a wonderful & kind man! He will me missed. Love, Lisa, Dave & Trevor

I'm saddened to learn of your husband's and father's death. Alan and I worked side by side each other at Lincoln High. I so enjoyed his wit and sense of humor. He was the soul male surrounded by many opinionated females, but was able to keep his head straight, in spite of this. Rest in peace Alan.
