Darlene A Weisz passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 21, 2022 surrounded by her family.

Darlene was born on March 21, 1935 to Frank and Barbara (Unterseher) Benz. She grew up on the family farm north of Dunn Center, North Dakota. Darlene graduated from Dunn Center High in 1953 where she enjoyed playing basketball. She then attended Dickinson State College, earned a teacher certificate, and spent some time teaching rural county school.

She married Hilmer Weisz on June 15, 1955 at Normanna Lutheran Church in Dunn Center, ND. They lived in Dodge, Parshall and Dickinson, ND.before moving to Sioux City, IA.in 1970. She worked various jobs in Sioux City, loved to spend time with family camping and fishing, attending her children’s activities, and gardening. She moved to Des Moines in 1991 after Hilmer passed away, and then to Ankeny in 2003. She worked for insurance agencies in Des Moines and a kitchen design company, but her favorite job was working as an assistant for her son processing insurance claims. She loved to go to work and continued in this position until 2018.

Darlene was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and wife. She was devoted to her family and loved to attend any and all activities that her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were involved in. Throughout her life she enjoyed teaching Sunday School, attending church, gardening, sewing, crafting, crocheting, and watching sports, especially her favorite college basketball team, the Iowa Hawkeyes.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Barbara; husband, Hilmer; sister, Ellie; brothers, Alvin, Walter, Leo, Reuben, Bernie, Harold, Frank, Henry, and Ernest.

She is survived by her children, Lynn (Jean) Weisz, Pam (Tim) Hayden and Cindy Weisz (Jenny); six grandchildren, Angi (Matt) Murray, Katie (Mike) Pitzen, Joe (Julie) Weisz, Tyler (Nikki) Weisz, Nate and Eric Hayden; and 14 great grandchildren, Jaxon, Harper, Lincoln, and Berkeley Murray, Jackson, Maddox, and Lawton Pitzen, Nicholas, Zachary, Olivia, and Adam Weisz, Rilyn, Aven, and Jude Weisz, and sister, Irene Wilhem.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., on Thursday, August 25, 2022 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, August 26, 2022, at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, 3510 72nd St, Urbandale. Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 27, 2022 at Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City, Iowa.
