Service Details

Richard “Kevin” Maher, age 67 of Des Moines, lost his long-fought battle with Alzheimer’s on Wednesday, August 17, 2022 at Taylor Hospice House in Des Moines.

Funeral services for Mr. Maher will be held on Saturday, August 27, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines with burial at 2:00 p.m. at Greencastle Cemetery, Mingo, Iowa. Kevin thought of himself as a simple man and, as such, his last request was that everyone come in casual clothing to bid him goodbye.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 27, 2022 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home prior to the funeral service from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association and online condolences may be made at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.

The son of Richard “Dick” and Doris (Coakley) Maher, Kevin was born on September 25, 1954 in Des Moines. He was a graduate of Mingo High School, Class of 1972. On December 10, 1994, Kevin was united in marriage with Barbara (Schellhammer) Maher. Kevin spent 42 years as a dedicated employee for Iowa State University as a cattle manager on their outlying research farm. Kevin was an avid hunter and lived by the creed, “If it flies, it dies.” He also became a talented woodworker and was noted for his rocking horses and woodburning plaques.

Those left to honor his memory are his wife Barbara; three children, Matthew (Angie) Kruse - Jacob, Jordan, Addison and Ryne of Waverly; Lucas (Katie) Kruse - Dane, Harley and Cy of Highlands Ranch, CO; and Megan (Curtis) Luckett - Harper and Anderson of Berkeley, CA; mother-in-law, Margaret Schellhammer of Johnston; two sisters-in-law, Diane (Bruce) Green of Chandler, AZ and Vicki (Mike) Landtiser of Kansas City, MO; one brother-in-law, Wayne (Jan) Schellhammer; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, one great great nephew and one great great niece; two uncles, Larry (Donna) Maher of Mt. Pleasant and Bob (Lila) Maher of Colfax; and numerous cousins.

Kevin was preceded in death by his parents, Dick and Doris Maher; and father-in-law, Glenn Schellhammer.

The family wishes to thank Brett Beckett, Hospice of the Midwest, the entire staff at Taylor Hospice House, and their wonderful neighbors for the fabulous care given to Kevin and his family throughout his journey with Alzheimer’s.
