John Hetherington, 90 passed away on August 10, 2022, at Wesley Acres.

John was born May 1, 1932, in Bismarck, North Dakota to Thomas and Sophie Hetherington. He graduated from North High School and attended Iowa State and the University of Iowa. John married Virginia (Hubbell) on August 21, 1955. They were married 66 years.

John retired from the Des Moines Register and Tribune after 25 years. He then started a successful commercial photography business. Throughout his photography career, he enjoyed mentoring high school students that had a passion for photography.

John was a member of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church, he was an Eagle Scout, and a past president of the Des Moines Wood Workers Association.

John loved spending time with his grandchildren, reading the Bible, fishing, and wood turning. He followed the Chicago Cubs for over 70 years and enjoyed rooting for the Iowa Hawkeyes.

John is survived by his loving wife, Virginia; brother, Thomas Hetherington (Bonnie); brother-in-law, Ed Hubbell; children, Lori Hetherington, Douglas Hetherington (Mara), Holly Collins (Chuck), and Steven Hetherington; grandchildren, Benjamin Gerovac (Amy), Chaz Collins (Megan), Trevor Collins, Sophie Hetherington, and Johanna Hetherington; great-grandchildren, Miley, Analiese, and Wrenley

A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 19, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 5615 SW 14th Street. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
