Service Details

Cheryl Riccelli, 60, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family on August 03, 2022.

Cheryl was born in Des Moines, Iowa on March 02, 1962, to Shirley (Collins) and Darrell Poortinga. She was the oldest of four siblings who have all been very close throughout the years. Cheryl, being the oldest, was considered the boss to all three of her siblings. Cheryl met her husband, Sam, and they married in the summer of 1984 at Christ the King Church in Des Moines. They had two daughters, Katherine and Heather. Cheryl enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom, babysitting for countless family members, and working with Sam and his family at farmers markets around the Des Moines metro. She was a devoted Catholic and a member of Christ the King Church. Her greatest enjoyment was spending time with her seven grandchildren. She preferred them to call her Mia instead of Grandma because she always thought she was too young to be called grandma.

Cheryl is survived by her husband Sam Riccelli, two daughters Katherine (Brad) Veach and Heather Riccelli, seven grandchildren Samuel Veach, Jada Gist, Madison Veach, Brooklyn Veach, Anthony Riccelli, Aryana McAtee, and Jameson McAtee. She is also survived by her parents Shirley Collins and Darrell (Sheila) Poortinga, siblings Karen (Jim) Brafford, John (Terri) Poortinga, and Bill (Michelle) Poortinga, and countless other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her grandmother Frances Bales, grandparents Norma and John Poortinga, stepfather Garry Collins, father and mother-in-law Anthony and Lucille Riccelli, and a host of other family and friends who went before us. Cheryl is a reminder to us all that we need to live in the moment and enjoy all the blessings that life has to offer.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 10, 2022 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines, with a Prayer Service at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will begin at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 11, 2022, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 5711 SW 9th Street, Des Moines, and will be followed by burial at Glendale Cemetery.
