Michael Hoskins
August 02, 2022
Michael “Mike” Hoskins, 64, passed away unexpectedly August 2, 2022, at his home in Des Moines, Iowa. Funeral services will take place at 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 12 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines.
Michael was born August 24, 1957, to Deane and Arlouine Hoskins in Des Moines, IA. He graduated from Interstate 35 High School and was a proud veteran of the US Army. He was employed as an Annuity Analyst at DXC Technology.
Mike liked to show the world a tough, gruff exterior, but inside he had a good heart, often leading him to being overly generous. Although he never married, he was a devoted family man with a strong sense of responsibility. He felt it was his duty to take care of the women in his life. He loved children and regaled them with stories using various voices for the characters. The more the kids giggled, the more involved the story got. He loved his family, his friends, Toonces the cat, and his dog, Porkchop.
He enjoyed jokes and puns and kept the office laughing with his sense of humor. Gambling at Prairie Meadows or Lakeside Casino occupied many of his weekends where he enjoyed his cigars or corncob pipe. Mike’s hobby was collecting comic books and DVDs of movies and TV series. He was a frugal man who enjoyed a good bargain, especially if he could get it for free. He liked going out to eat, as long as it was a buffet. His friends looked forward to their birthday dinners because they knew they'd be going to some place that had a good spread.
He was a huge fan of actress Yancy Butler (Witchblade) with many pictures and autographs of her. Mike traveled to various conventions around the country to visit with her, sometimes accompanied by his good friend Jason Elliott.
Michael is survived by his sister, Janet (Bob) Rice; nephew, David (Jake) Theobald; niece, Jennifer Hutchinson; great-nieces and great-nephew, Ava, Camille and Isaiah, as well as other friends and family.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, and sisters, Linda Fernandez and Carolyn Chemin.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the ARL or Wounded Warriors in loving memory of Michael. Online condolences may be expressed at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.

I attended Michaels service today and it was beautiful, honorable and exactly what I think he wouldve wanted.
Though we havent worked together for several years? He checked in with me approximately once a month and wed have a gab session. (or hed gab) for at least an hour. I would tell my husband, Im gonna call Michael and hed say, okay so youre unavailable for a couple hours. Lol!
He refused to call Porkchops leash a leash. He would call it a lish. A what I would say? A lish he would say. I said Michael, its called a leash to which he would say: thats what I said, his lish!
And then there was always at least once if not more times during our conversations where there would be a little bit of a longer than usual pause followed by: weeeeeeeellllllll . . . And then the back story. I do have a funny(?) Story to share. When we were carpooling I was dropping him home one night after work but he had forgotten his house key and couldnt get in. The only thing we could think to do was to climb in through the bedroom window, I was the most able (barely) to do this but I dont know the layout of his house or how to make my way through the dark to find a light switch and make my way to the front door! Plus, I know Porkchop, but he doesnt know me! Michael assured me that it would be okay, Id land on the bed and wouldnt get hurt. I apologized profusely but I couldnt do it. We managed to finagle some things for him to step up on to reach the window and I did what I could to steady them so he wouldnt fall off of them. And I just kind of stood there praying he would have the strength to pull himself over that window ledge while I was bracing myself to catch him if he fell! It really wasnt funny at the time but in hindsight and for bystanders, it was hilarious!
He was very special to me and I will miss him dearly.

Mike, the class of 75 at I-35 will never be the same without you and the prospective you had about life. Lots of good memories of camping with the scouts and the laughter and joking you brought to everyone. You made every day more interesting and had a great heart. Peace to you and your family and friends. Steve
