Eva Marie Heckathorn

Eva Marie Heckathorn, 77, passed away peacefully at her home on July 10, 2022, surrounded by her loved ones and pets.

Eva was born on September 21, 1944 in Teplitz Schönau, Germany. Her family left Germany and went to the CSSR (Czechoslovak Socialist Republic) during the war. When Russia invaded the CSSR, the family fled their farm and went back to Germany with only one suitcase per person.

Eva grew up in Heidelberg where she met her husband, George, at a carnival. It was love at first sight. George and Eva left Germany for the U.S. and settled in Muskegon, Michigan. They traveled a lot with George's job and finally moved to Iowa. Eva worked as a seamstress and in retail.

She enjoyed reading, playing video games - especially Zelda, sewing, cooking, and crossword puzzles. Eva was a kind soul whom everyone loved. She had a great love for her family and pets.

Eva is survived by her husband of 60 years, George; her sons, Bill (Micki) Heckathorn and Anthony Heckathorn; six grandchildren, Phillip Heckathorn, James (Grace) Heckathorn, Ava (Matt) Heckathorn, Michael Heckathorn, Kelsie (James) Heckathorn, and Sierra Neuroth.

She was preceded in death by her sister, mother, father and grandparents.

Eva’s gift of life will continue as a donor to Des Moines University. She gives students the opportunity to study the human body, help advance medicine, and further the care of others suffering with Merkel Cell Carcinoma.
