Stanley O. Gullion Sr., 88, of Des Moines, Iowa passed away peacefully November 2, 2009, surrounded by family at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines after a short battle with lung cancer.

He was born August 16, 1921 and grew up 3 ½ miles east of Columbia, Iowa on a farm with 8 siblings. He was the oldest of 4 brothers and 4 sisters. He served in the US Army from November 1942 to November 1945. He went into the Army as a private and moved up the ranks to 1st Lieutenant of the 85th Infantry Division. While in the Army he served in Italy and was awarded the Purple Heart. Stanley was in the cement trade for 40 years, 33 of them self employed.

"Stan the Man," as he referred to himself, knew no strangers. He believed if you were kind to others, they would be kind to you. His unique laugh, great sense of humor, and his love for dancing will be remembered by all. When asked if he did everything he wanted to during his life he responded you bet and sometimes twice!

Stanley will be missed by his 2 children, Stanley Gullion Jr. (Donna), Claudine Prenosil (Terry), 3 grandchildren, Tammy Bachmann (Doug), Stacy Van Loon (Steve), Chad Prenosil (Amy), and 8 great grandchildren, Nicole West (Stan), Eric Gullion (Ronnie), Skyler Prenosil, Courtney Trotter, Kennady Prenosil, Carter Prenosil, Brock Van Loon, and Blake Van Loon, 3 great great grandchildren, Dylan Gullion, Devin Gullion, and Dolan Gullion and his friend of many years and her family, Loretta Lamb. He was preceded in death by his wife of over 42 years Edith (Agan) Gullion, his grandson Brent Gullion and his brother Glenn Gullion.

A visitation with the family present will be from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Thursday, November 5th, at Hamilton's Southtown, 5400 SW 9th Street. Funeral services will be held Friday, November 6th at Hamilton's Southtown at 11:00 am, with interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens. A celebration of his life will follow at 1:00 pm at the Fraternal Order of Eagles #109, 6567 Bloomfield Road.
