Marilyn Rae Kollmorgen
June 17, 2022
Marilyn Rae (Werner) Kollmorgen passed away in the arms of her loving husband on Friday June 17, 2022. She lived a wonderful life full of love, family, friends, volunteerism and community service.
Marilyn was born August 25, 1936, in Creston, Iowa to Ray and Evelyn Werner. She was the oldest of 2 daughters and graduated from Creston High in 1954.
She attended Iowa State University where she majored in Home Economics with a minor in Chemistry. During her college years she began a life of service and leadership as president of Delta Zeta sorority, president of Mortar Board, and VEISHEA central committee.
Marilyn met Robert Kollmorgen at ISU and they were married in 1958. Together they built a life of love and service, raised 3 children, and enhanced the community around them.
She loved to cook and bake, (especially desserts), support charitable causes, and spend as much time as possible with her grandchildren. In her free time, Marilyn loved to read, garden, travel and was always interested in discussing world events.
At home we called her ‘Mrs. Urbandale’ as she served on the school board, the city council, the parks and recreation board, the historical society, the booster club and was a founding force in the creation of the Urbandale Caring Corps as well as Endow Urbandale. She was recognized as Citizen of the Year in 1979 and named to the Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame.
In the community she served on multiple boards including The Unity Point Foundation, Iowa State University Foundation, Living History Farms, and Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. She was a long-time active member of P.E.O.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Evelyn Werner. She is survived by her loving husband, Bob; children, Julie (Mike) Amend, Dan (Karen) Kollmorgen, and Tom (Julie) Kollmorgen; grandchildren, Erin Amend, Megan (Colton) Vulgamott, Kellen Kollmorgen, Thayne Kollmorgen, Max Kollmorgen, and Anna Kollmorgen; as well as her sister, Karen (Ron) Morse.
Hers was a life well lived, remarkable for both her warm loving personality and keen intellect. We will miss her very much.
Services will include a visitation from 1:00-3:00 p.m. and funeral at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, June 24 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 8301 Aurora Ave. in Urbandale.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Marilyn’s memory to Endow Urbandale at endowurbandale.org and condolences expressed at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.

I am so sorry for your loss. I was your next door neighbor on Clegg Road and babysat for Julie, Dan and Tom. Marilyn wrote a recommendation letter for me to get into nursing school. I graduated and had a 43 year career in nursing. She was a wonderful woman.

Marilyn was such a good mentor for so many of us. She was the gold standard for community involvement. She accomplished so much herself but perhaps even more through her web of followers, of which we are proud to be members.

Bob, and family, Marilyn's life certainly lives on through you, and the many wonderful things she accomplished for the organizations she served that live on after her. I know from our serving on the UnityPoint Health Foundation board together for many years that she turned the significance of the board around dramatically and with her assistance it blossomed. We are all thankful that we have had the opportunity to work together with her. Her life was meaningful for many people, and we appreciate the opportunity to share our thoughts of her with you as together we celebrate her life.
