Ethel Jean Herrig, age 86, of Des Moines, Iowa died Wednesday, June 8, 2022 at her home.
Ethel was born December 1, 1935 in Des Moines, Iowa to Earl and Elsie (Frizell) Saffer. She worked as a package handler for UPS for many years, where she made lifelong friendships and thought of them as her UPS family.
Ethel was an animal lover. She fed all the animals, whether they were squirrels and birds or the stray neighborhood cats. She loved cooking, flower gardening, and her cats, Savanah and Tip. Ethel enjoyed visiting with family and friends. Her family was very important to her and she was so proud to have found out that she was a great-grandma for the first time.
She is survived by her sons, John Herrig and Jeff Herrig; grandchildren, Jake, Jennifer, James and Troy Herrig; and great-granddaughter, Rylee Herrig.
Ethel was preceded in death by her son, Joe Herrig; her parents, Earl and Elsie Saffer; and her sister, Sherley Nove.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, 2022 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines.

Ethel always had a calming smile for all us ups drivers at the end of are very long days she was are den mother. Sending my condolences to her family and friends

A Great friend and Good People neighbor, We enjoyed together fireworks and telling each other the special sales we would find, We also had mutual interests in coffee outside on the Virannza as we called it, as well as that she loved J.D. (my dog) and I's visits. Oh and we shared baked treats together and Updates on Curse of Oak Island episodes and as well keeping Neighborhood watch. She was a very polite and earnest lady and will be terribly missed. May God Open his arms to welcome her into her home in paradise. God without a doubt Called another Great One home.
