LaVern "Vern" Gill

LaVern “Vern” Gill of Des Moines passed away on June 3, 2022, at the age of 73, surrounded by family at Kavanagh House.

He was born in Springfield, Missouri on September 1, 1948, to Eugene and Margaret “Francie” (Lee). His early childhood was spent living in Boone, Iowa and his family moved to the southside of Des Moines in his early teens. Vern attended Lincoln High School and his work life was spent as a concrete finisher, construction work, and working for his sister at the Melrose Market in Melrose, Iowa.

Vern was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and would rarely be seen without some type of Hawkeye apparel on. He enjoyed growing a garden, mushroom hunting, and most of all having a great time with friends and family.

Those left behind to celebrate Vern’s life are his daughter Laura (Mark) Thompson; step-son Brian Daily; grandchildren Emma Thompson, and Luke Thompson; step-grandchildren Chris Thompson, Heather Kinzie, Katrioma Daily, Maggie Daily; 3 step-great-grandchildren; brothers Sam Gill, Dan Gill; brother-in-law Doug McLey; friends like family Dennis and Mary Juran.

He was preceded in death by his parents Gene and Francie Gill; sister Darlene McLey; sister-in-law Joan Gill.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

He will truly be missed at Wakonda Manor.My dogs as well as others just loved Vern and the treats he carried around in his pants pocket.He had a heart of gold.May you RIP Vern.I will miss you!
