Robert Wesley Wheeler
West Des Moines, Iowa
Robert Wheeler, age 76, passed away on Thursday, June 2, 2022 at his home. He was born on January 20, 1946 in California, and raised by Ransom & Julia Wheeler in Hastings, Iowa.
Bob earned his Bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University. He served honorably in the U.S. Air Force as a Captain until his discharge in 1973. He worked in the Environmental Science Department of The University of Iowa and retired after 33 years of service. Bob was a member of American Association of Woodturners. He was a gifted Artisan with the brain of an engineer. If you spoke with Bob and shared your hobbies you would probably end up with a well-crafted piece of art celebrating that very hobby. In his free time, he made ornaments for Festival of Trees & Lights and enjoyed gardening both vegetables and flowers. Bob met his partner in crime and shenanigans, Ginnie Noe in 2012 and married her at the Renaissance Fair in 2015, officiated by the Fair Queen. Almost ten years of love brought great joy to them both. Bob was a good provider, great father, and loving husband. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is lovingly survived by his wife Ginnie, daughter Malisa (Jason) Ireland and Elizabeth Bell, grandchildren Sherry, Bob, JD, Katie, and Rogan, great-grandchildren Lucas, Owen, Ava, and Leah, and his six sisters.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Liebchen Prather, granddaughter Elisabeth Katerina Prather, and his second wife Patricia “Patty” Coll-Wheeler.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., with funeral service to begin at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 8, 2022, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Military rites will be immediately following the service in the chapel.
Those planning on an expression of sympathy, please direct your memorials to either Adel United Methodist Church or The American Red Cross.

My condolences to Bob's family.
I worked with Bob at the University of Iowa Hygienic Laboratory where we were involved in auditing Iowa laboratories for EPA through IDNR. Bob's strength was listening to the needs of laboratories and offering solutions to problems in order for the laboratories to maintain certification.
Some laboratories required extensive traveling. Bob was a good traveling companion and made the otherwise tedious drive enjoyable.

I called him "Doc". He was a kind, patient guy. He introduced me to Oscar Brand, Bull Durham, Irv Levine and Dick Jonas. Almost every model I built since the Doc married my Mom was done so with Songs of the Military playing in the background. Godspeed, ya ol' Blue Suiter. I have and will continue to think of you often. I will miss singing "Guantanamo Bay" on the highway, in the rain with you. So many fond memories.

Oh Lisa. I was shocked to hear that "Bob Dude" had passed away. I was thinking about hi and Mom Friday - which would have been their wedding anniversary. He took such good care of her and I will always be grateful for that. Chris, Bruce and I will see you Wednesday. If you have time, while you're in town, we'd love to see you. 515-778-1078
