Melvin “Pete” Lee Nixon, 80, died Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at Honor Health Deer Valley Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. He was born November 15, 1941, to Ervin and Irma (Ellison) Nixon in Iowa Falls, Iowa.

Pete grew up in Williams, Iowa and served in the US Air Force from 1959 through 1963. He drove a truck for Crouse Cartage Co. for many years, retiring in 2000. Pete spent his years doing what he loved, trail riding, camping and spending time with family. Since his retirement, he spent his winters at Desert Shadows RV Resort in Phoenix, AZ.

Pete was an avid Iowa State Fair goer and enjoyed camping at the Iowa State Fair for many years. His happiest times were dancing with his soulmate, his wife, Linda, and he enjoyed his church family.

Pete is survived by his wife of the heart, for the last 5 years, Sandy McKernan, children, Martin (Lori) Nixon, William Nixon of Des Moines, Michelle Severns, Michael Schutt, of Phoenix, AZ; Rachelle Nixon (Brian Archer) of Des Moines, IA, Todd Schutt (Kathy) of Phoenix, AZ, Misty Rhodes, and Trisha Nixon and Daniel Nixon, who he considered his children, all of Des Moines, IA.

Grandchildren, Macayla & Nevaeh Rhodes, Shannon Gunderson, and Lindsey Nelson of Des Moines, Brandon Archer of Hollywood, CA, Misha Nixon of Glenn’s Ferry ID and Amanda Nixon of Des Moines, IA, Nicholas Schutt, Nathan, Lauren and Parker Severns of Phoenix, AZ.

Great-Grandsons, Micah, Evan, Harley, and Noah Nelson of Des Moines, IA

Brothers, Ron of Jonesboro AR, Tom of Williams, IA, Dick of Santee, CA and sisters, Shirley Crosser of Steamboat Rock, IA, Clara Robb of Des Moines, IA, Janet Grandgeorge of Alden, IA, many nieces and nephews and many special friends.

Pete was preceded in death by his wife in 2015, Linda; daughter-in-law, Heidi Nixon; and son-in-law Matthew Severns.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with funeral service at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, June 18, 2020, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Interment will follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery.
