Robert D. Cory

Robert Cory, age 90, passed away in Des Moines on May 27, 2022. He was born October 5, 1931, in Elkhart, Iowa, to Allen and Pearl Cory.

Robert graduated from Elkhart High School in 1950 and was united in marriage to Lou Jean Lewis at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Elkhart on August 19, 1951. He proudly served in the United States Army from February 1952 to August 1953.

Robert began working at Meadow Gold Dairy in 1950 and worked there for 44 years, retiring in 1994.

When his boys were young, they moved from Norwalk to a farm outside Bondurant where they raised cattle, pigs, sheep and horses.

Robert was a member of American Legion Post 396 and together, he and Lou Jean enjoyed traveling with a wonderful group of other Legion members over the years. He also served as a member of the Midwest Dairy Council and as a 4-H leader.

Robert is survived by his wife of 71 years, Lou Jean Cory; brother, Jerry (Sandi) Cory; sons, Stephen (Marla) Cory and David (Merri) Cory; grandchildren, Jennifer (Chris) Holmes and Collin (Theresa Fitzgerald) Cory; great-grandchildren, Cory and Mackenzie Holmes; sisters-in-law, Barbara Cory and Karen Cory; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Allen and Pearl Cory; and siblings, Helen, Darlene, Pat, Buck, Jim, Michael, and Lewis.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 3, 2022, at St. Mary-Holy Cross Catholic Church, 460 NW Washington Ave. in Elkhart, with burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 5-7 p.m. at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines.

Memorial contributions can be made to Bondurant American Legion Post 396 in loving memory of Robert.
