Lloyd L. Stapes

Lloyd Laverne Stapes of Des Moines passed away on Monday, May 23, 2022 at the age of 89, at his home surrounded by lots of love from his family.

He was born in Redfield Iowa on January 9, 1933 to Floyd and Anna Stapes. He arrived early and weighed only 3 pounds at his birth. Lloyd graduated from Redfield high school and served in the Navy from 1951 to 1953. He married his wife Mary “Charlene” Aldrich on September 10, 1955. From this union they had three wonderful sons: Tim, Rick, and Tom.

Lloyd loved his family, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and made sure he made it to every family function possible. He enjoyed working in his garden growing amazing tomatoes, having an immaculate yard and proudly having the best Christmas light display in Greenfield Plaza. He also loved his Iowa Hawkeyes. One of his favorite things was spending his time at the ballpark either coaching or watching his grandsons play baseball. He was their biggest fan and never missed a game.

Lloyd worked as a plant manager at Monarch Cement until his retirement.

Those left behind to celebrate Lloyd’s life are his children Rick (Susan) and Tom, his grandchildren Cody (Laura) and Chad (Katie), his great grandchildren Sophia and Auggie.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlene, a son Tim, parents Floyd and Anna Stapes, two brothers Merlin Stapes and Darrell Stapes and a sister Melba Boone.

A private family service will be held at a later date where he will be laid to rest with his wife Charlene at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery.
