Larry Williamson, age 76, passed away Sunday, May 1, 2022 at Eden Crest in Ankeny.

Larry was born September 12, 1945 in Kirkston, Minnesota to Verna (Berhow) Williamson and Richard Williamson. He attended school in Fertile, Minnesota. At the age of 14, he moved to Iowa with his brothers. At age 17, he joined the painter’s union. The mural in the Temple B,nai Jeshurun synagogue on Grand Avenue in Des Moines was painted by Larry in the 1960s. At the age of 40, he retired from painting due to his health. Larry then owned Williamson’s Bike Shop for approximately 20 years and was proud to be able to fix children’s bikes free of charge. Williamson’s was a neighborhood staple. Larry enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing pool, cards, and doing puzzles. He continued to ride his bike 10 to 15 miles every day, and he enjoyed walking around his neighborhood picking up cans.

He is survived by his daughter, Cheryl Oxford (Cecil Ball); grandchildren, Kayla, Jeremiah and Lance Oxford; great grandchild, Savannah; siblings, Stanley (Jeanie) Rasmussen, Linda (Ron) Ragen, Sonie (Dennis) Thompson, Barbara (Aloise) Kuehunki, Betty Kunerth, Tom (Karen) Williamson and Rosie McGowen; as well as many other extended family members and friends.

Larry was preceded in death by his mother, Verna (Carl) Rasmussen; father, Richard (Martha) Williamson; son, Lance Williamson; and his brothers, James Rasmussen, David Rasmussen, and Everett Williamson.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, June 5, 2022 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, June 6, 2022, also at Hamilton’s, and will be followed by burial at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. There will be a luncheon at Hamilton’s immediately following the burial.
