Karen Leah Henderson
May 16, 2022
Karen Leah Henderson, 68, won her 18-month battle with cancer on May 16, 2022, as she entered heaven’s gates hearing “well done, good and faithful servant.”
Karen was born on August 31, 1953 in Des Moines, Iowa and graduated from Norwalk High School in 1971. She attended church faithfully where she met the love of her life, Audie Henderson. They were united in marriage at Berean Assembly of God on October 6, 1973. To this union was born Brandi, Greg and Eric. Being a wife and mother was her main focus for several years. She worked as a special education associate at Des Moines Public Schools, retiring after 19 years of service. After retirement, she served for several years as a Family Services Assistant for Hamilton’s Funeral Home.
Karen’s life was a reflection of her genuine love for the Lord. She was a witness of his love to everyone she met. This was also demonstrated through volunteering at Taylor House, and her leadership involvement at New Hope Assembly of God, including starting and facilitating Grief Share for several years. Relationships were important to her and so many have been impacted by her love and kindness. She was a mother to many and a friend to all.
Those left to honor and live out her legacy are: husband, Audie Henderson; daughter, Brandi Otto (Dave); sons, Greg Henderson (Lisa) and Eric Henderson (Katie); grandchildren, Josie, Gabbi, Jackson, Madelyn, Payton, Kaleb, Addy, Lilli, Gavin, Grady, Laney, and Brooke; great-granddaughter, Mila; sister, Corinne DeHamer (Dave); mother-in-law, Dixie Henderson; sister-in-law, Cindy Quijano (Alec); brother-in-law, Jeff Henderson (Missy); and several special nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her parents, Dwight and Colleen Houghton; sister, Janet Rowe; brothers, Andy Houghton and Mark Houghton; and father-in-law, Mort Henderson.
A special thanks to Dr. Elg, his amazing staff, and UnityPoint Methodist Infusion Center, for the care and genuine love shown to us throughout our journey.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, May 19, from 5-8 p.m. at New Hope Assembly of God, 4425 70th Street, Urbandale, with a Celebration of Life on Friday, May 20 at 11:00 a.m., also at the church. Live Stream of service available here
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family in loving memory of Karen to be used for a yearly camp scholarship fund at New Hope Assembly of God.

Audi & family - we are so sorry for your loss. Emma has such fun memories of spending time with Josie at Audi & Karens home. And we always enjoyed conversations with Karen over the years. Heaven gained an angel. Keeping all of you in our thoughts and prayers.

I grew up with Karen and the Hendersons. Karen and Brandi both helped me through a really rough time in my life and I will be forever grateful. I am so glad I have some really great childhood memories of staying all night at the house and hanging in general. She really was one of the best in the world.

Those of us who were blessed to have known Karen are the lucky ones. What a special, caring, loving, and faithful person. We should all strive to be more like her. Those who knew Karen know she is thrilled to be in Heaven with Jesus and her loved ones, but we on earth will miss her so much. Hugs and prayers to her beloved family.
