Joan Angela Hagans, age 80, passed away Sunday, May 8, 2022 at Ramsey Village in Des Moines.

Joan was born February 17, 1942 in Bayard, Iowa to Ivan and Clara (Loeffler) Mozena. Joan was raised on the farm where she learned her strong work ethic. She graduated from Scranton Consolidated High School on May 24, 1960. After graduating school, Joan moved to Des Moines, where she worked full time at an insurance company and part-time at Hinky Dinky.

In 1965, Joan met Jim Hagans at Hinky Dinky. Together they courted till marriage in 1969, living in Des Moines. In 1972, Joan gave birth to son, Mike Hagans. Together, Joan and Jim raised Mike in Urbandale. Joan loved helping Mike with decorating his house and helping in the yard.

During Joan’s time as a wife and mother, she worked for Dahl’s at the courtesy counter for 35 years. Joan enjoyed her job.

In Joan’s free time you would see her attending to her beautiful, well cared for yard. She was very proud of her yard. Joan enjoyed sewing, making clothes, curtains, blankets, and cross stitch. She loved crafts. She also loved taking care of her granddog, Cookie. Together they would go for walks and visit the other dogs in the neighborhood.

Joan loved to spend time with her family and friends. She enjoyed cooking, baking, and especially the holiday meals for the family. She was a great cook!

Joan leaves us with her legacy: “She wraps herself in strength, carries herself with confidence, and works hard, strengthening her arms for the task at hand.” She left footprints of kindness, love, courage, compassion, humor, inspiration and joy!

She is survived by her husband, Jim Hagans of Urbandale; son, Mike Hagans (Liz Ogle) of Urbandale; granddog, Cookie; siblings, Jerry Mozena of Ankeny and Jean Swanson of Springfield, MO; and other extended family and friends.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents.
