Eugene Charles Kragenbrink, 86, passed away April 23, 2022.
Eugene was born August 11, 1935 to Margaret Ida Yelden Kragenbrink and William Henry Kragenbrink at his grandparent’s farm near Earlville, Iowa. He graduated from Earlville High School and began employment with Des Moines Savings and Loan in Des Moines. After a 45-year career in the mortgage business, Eugene retired in 1997.
In April, 1979, Gene and Melody Powell were united in marriage. They lived in Ankeny, Iowa many years before moving to Deerfield Retirement Community in Urbandale.
Gene enjoyed fishing, landscaping, photography, classical music, wildlife art, reading, golf and travel. He was an active volunteer for his church, community, and neighborhood groups. He was interested in conservation and environmental issues. In retirement, he served as a board member and treasurer for Highland Memory Gardens.
Gene is survived by his wife, Melody; sisters, Joanne (Jim) Laxson of North Liberty, IA and Carol State of Edgewood, IA; sister-in-law, Carol Kragenbrink of Northwood, IA; cousin, Maralyn (George) Burnside; and his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William “Bud” Kragenbrink; and sister, Virginia Strief.
A memorial service will be held Friday, April 29, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 517 SW Des Moines St. in Ankeny, IA with visitation and reception to follow. Burial will be at Highland Memory Gardens, One NE 60th Avenue in Des Moines.
