Dorothy Bennett passed away on April 10, 2022, at the age of 90. She was born June 21, 1931, in Ames, Iowa, to Luke and Thelma Bodensteiner.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Hollis William Miles, Jr. in April of 1950. Five children were born to this union: Dean, Dennis, Debra, Deanna, and Denise. The couple later divorced. On September 30, 1976, she married Loris “Gus” Lee Bennett at Grand View Lutheran Church in Des Moines. Dorothy and Gus shared 23 wonderful years together until his passing in 1999.

Dorothy was a loving mother who dedicated her time and talents to caring for her home and family. Later in life, she held various jobs outside the home.

Dorothy enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, baking, dancing, listening to country western music, and trips to Prairie Meadows. She also enjoyed watching basketball and game shows, especially The Price is Right. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Dorothy is survived by her son, Dennis (Paula) Miles; daughters, Debra (Kevin) Walker, Deanna (Leland) Summy, and Denise Miles; grandchildren, Dawn (Eric) Miles-Wright, Jaymie Miles, Shanna Patton, Luke (Grace Moss) Miles, Thomas (Melissa) Bennett, Allison (Jon) Piper, Kelsey (Matt) Widlund, Megan (Matthew) Neal, and Vanessa Moranchel (Chris Huynh); 14 great-grandchildren with one on the way and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Gus Bennett; son, Dean Miles and siblings, Ruth Ann Bockelman, Robert Bodensteiner and James Bodensteiner.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 16, 2022, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave. in Des Moines with burial to follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday, April 15 from 5-7 p.m., also at the funeral home.

In honor of Dorothy being a 20-year breast cancer survivor, the family suggests memorials be directed to the American Cancer Society.
