Frances Favaro Ulrich

Frances Favaro Ulrich, 85, passed away on April 8, 2022, at MercyOne Hospital in Des Moines.
Fran was born March 12, 1937, in Des Moines, Iowa to Joseph and Mary (Toso) Favaro. She attended St. Anthony’s Catholic School and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1954 and Americana School of Beauty in 1955. She worked as a beautician for Tony Francios, and then taught at Americana School of Beauty and Sal’s Beauty School. In the 1960’s she opened Johnny’s Hall of Fame in Des Moines with her husband. This was the first sports bar in Iowa. They eventually sold the bar in 2006. In the 1970’s she was part owner of the River Queen in Des Moines. In the 1980’s she was the owner of Fran’s Place in Des Moines.
She was united in marriage to John Ulrich on November 4, 1964, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Des Moines. She was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.
Fran enjoyed fishing, skiing, and gardening, and was an avid golfer. She was a fabulous cook and baker. She loved to travel and traveled all over the world. She was a 7-time club champion at Echo Valley Golf Course and a 2-time club champion at Indian Springs Golf Course in La Quinta, California. She was everyone’s favorite aunt, deeply loved by her nieces and nephews, and they all wanted to be like her.
Fran is survived by her husband, John; sisters, Jo Ann Walker and Mary Ann Favaro; brother, William (Marianne) Favaro; 226 nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Mario Favaro; and sister, Esther Favaro-Leo.
Visitation will be held Saturday, May 28, 2022, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s the Apostle Catholic Church, 720 Orchard Hills Drive, Norwalk, Iowa. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. also at the church.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of your choice in loving memory of Fran.

John, I am so sorry to hear of Fran's passing. I think one of my favorite memories of working at Johnny's was the trip we took to New Orleans. You both went to such lengths to make sure we all had a great time! My thoughts and prayers are with you at what must be a very difficult time.

We were so sorry to hear of Frans passing. I always enjoyed our golf games both at home and in California when we were visiting our friends Bonnie and John. Fran was a classy lady and so much fun. She will be missed.

I went to Johnny's for an after work cocktail, when I worked for the county. When Fran walked in, she lit up the room! What a special lady. I have so many good memories of the bar and her. May you find peace my friend. My prayers are with her family. Patti Fortune

We have fond memories of the Road Trip that Fran and Kay took to join us in Colorado and our visit to Palm Springs.

There was no one kinder and more generous than Fran. She was so much fun to be around. When I went to Johnnys Hall of Fame she always made me feel welcome. It was such a fun time in my life. You will be missed Fran! What a great lady! Many prayers for your family ! May you Rest In Peace.
