Seth Mars
March 29, 2022
Seth Aaron Mars passed away March 29, 2022 at Methodist Medical Center after a series of seizures. Services will be at Soteria Church, 3250 SE Soteria Ave., in West Des Moines, IA on Monday, April 4, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. with visitation two hours prior.
Seth was born April 22, 1981 to Bill and Charleen Mars in Cambridge, MN. His father’s calling into ministry gave Seth and his siblings opportunities to live in Minnesota, Texas, and Iowa. He attended high school at Johnston and was a graduate of the auto mechanics program at DMACC in Ankeny, IA.
He worked for All-Pro in Des Moines before moving to San Diego, CA. While in San Diego he became the chef and kitchen manager for Dirty Birds Restaurant. During his time at Dirty Birds, Yahoo conducted a nationwide survey for the best wings. Seth’s recipe for wings was voted “best wings west of the Mississippi.” Upon returning to Des Moines, Seth worked for All-Pro in Des Moines and most recently two restaurants in the downtown community of Des Moines, IA.
Seth’s favorite times were shooting and hunting with Dad, and the weekly suppers they shared on Thursday nights at various restaurants in Des Moines. He confided in his dad that along with him and mom, Char, they were his best friends. Date nights with his nieces and nephews was one of his greatest joys. Seth would take them on hikes to look at nature and discover plants or rock formations. As a child he loved reading; his favorite books were his Bible and the Encyclopedia Britannica. He would tell his nieces and nephews those books were his internet growing up. Seth also loved to draw, write, and paint. Friends were a treasure to him, he always made time to listen and empathize.
He was known to have exotic pets in his life but his two favorites were a tortoise named, El Tortuga and an American Huskie, Clyde. For a number of years Seth met with a group of guys to play Rifts and then online with various games.
He is survived by his parents, Bill and Char Mars; his brother, Josh and Jackie Mars and their children, Brayden, Laird, Emery and Thea Mars; his sister, Sarah and Chris Haugen and their children, Synoma, Ossean, and Roland Haugen; many aunts, uncles and cousins on both sides of the family; special friends, Chris and Amber Nigon and their daughters, Audrey and Cloe, as well as Ryan and Christy Cook and their son Luke; and many friends and acquaintances in Des Moines and California where he was known for his fierce loyalty to his friends.
Seth was preceded in death by his grandparents, Rev. Don and Gladys Mars and Pat and Phyllis Larson; uncle, Terry Grandholm; aunt, Jackie Mars; and cousin, Holly Mars.

My heart goes out to Bill, Char, Josh, and Sarah. Seth was my best friend, as he was to many, and his loss is so incredibly profound. My life will never be the same without him. He is part of the reason I am the man I am. Seth was always a cheerleader for me encouraging me in absolutely anything I wanted to do. A true free spirit who was undeniably Seth all of the time. He was always there for me no matter what the situation was. He was the best man at my wedding and a friend for 27 years. All who knew him had a story about him. He was larger than life and the void he leaves us all can never be filled. But I am choosing to be thankful for the countless hours of doing nothing and everything with him. He was a blessing in my life and will forever be a voice from within. I am so sorry for your loss and as Seth would be, I will be your friend for life. I love you all.
